Socratic engagement is an essential educational practice at Saint Augustine Sports and Science Institutes. This method of discussion based, question-and-answer instruction between tutors and students encourages critical thinking, the challenge of preconceptions, and the nurturing of thoughtful discourse. Saint Augustine Sports and Science Institutes, facilitators (“tutors”) guide students through cooperative dialogues where they share their questions, discuss their readings and essays, and mutually sharpen their thinking. This unique exchange allows tutors and students to both sharpen their reasoning skills, while also forming one another through biblical discipleship. These dialogues not only foster intellectual formation, but also play a significant role in spiritual and vocational growth.
Saint Augustine Sports and Science Institute educational philosophy is based on The Oxford tutorial system. It is a cornerstone of our educational philosophy. Originating in the medieval colleges and private halls of Oxford and Cambridge, this system is built upon intimate discussions and mentorship. In the Oxford tutorial system, students delve into subjects through one-on-one or small-group sessions with tutors. This tutorial system shapes our mission to strengthen local communities by offering Christ-Centered tutorial-based education that fosters intellectual, spiritual, and vocational formation.
We define human formation as the lifelong journey of nurturing individuals within their families and faith communities to worship God and interact with the world in accordance with divine design and commands. Our approach emphasizes intellectual, spiritual, and vocational formation and recognizes the essential role of family and the local church in shaping core beliefs and worldviews. Human formation is an ongoing journey that encompasses life within and beyond the home, with the goal of preparing individuals for life both in this world and in the world to come.
